Full Wildlife Exclusion, Trapping, and Attic Remediation After Years of Failed Repairs
Squirrels, mice, and rats across multiple attic spaces and basement — with prior DIY and cheap company failures
This project was a full wildlife exclusion and remediation job involving squirrels, mice, and rats. By the time Elite Wildlife Solutions was called in, the homeowner already knew there were wildlife issues, but they did not realize how extensive the damage and activity had become until we completed our inspection and provided photo documentation. The client lived out of state, which made proper documentation even more important.

The Problem: Years of Failed Repairs
Unfortunately, this is something we see far too often. The prior owner had attempted DIY repairs and had also hired cheaper companies multiple times. Even after those attempts, the wildlife problem was never properly resolved. Over time, those shortcuts allowed the issue to continue, which led to more damage, more contamination, and a much larger project than it likely would have been if the home had been properly excluded from the beginning.
During our inspection, we found signs of continued access and long-term activity. The home had already been patched and worked on before, but the previous repairs were not enough to stop the animals from getting back in. That is the danger of cheap exclusion work or DIY patching — it may look like something was done, but if the right areas are missed or the wrong materials are used, wildlife can continue to enter, chew, contaminate, and damage the home.
Our Plan: Exclusion First, Then Trapping
Elite Wildlife Solutions first completed a full exclusion seal-up to stop the access points. Once the home was properly sealed, we began the trapping process. Because of the amount of activity, we trapped and monitored the property for several weeks before any cleanup could safely begin.
Over the course of the trapping period, we removed 6 squirrels from two attic areas and 5 rats from the basement. After the trapping phase, we continued monitoring until there were no fresh droppings or new signs of activity. Once we went two weeks without fresh evidence, we were able to move forward with the removal and remediation process.
Remediation and Cleanup
Once the wildlife activity was confirmed stopped, we began the cleanup phase. This step is important because wildlife contamination is not just a cosmetic issue. Droppings, urine, nesting material, and damaged insulation can create odor problems, air quality concerns, and unhealthy conditions inside the home. Simply removing animals is not enough when contamination has been left behind.
- Removal of all contaminated insulation
- Cleanup of affected attic and basement areas
- Disinfecting treatments on all surfaces
- Antimicrobial treatment of affected surfaces
- Deodorizing treatment throughout
- Negative air machine used during the remediation process
- Continued treatment and cleanup over approximately one week
Air Sealing and Insulation Replacement
After the remediation phase was completed, we moved into the restoration portion of the project. We air sealed gaps and penetrations between the attic areas and the living space to reduce air leakage, improve energy efficiency, and separate the attic environment from the conditioned living space below.
Once air sealing was completed, we reinstalled batt insulation in the wall and vaulted ceiling areas where needed, then installed new blown-in fiberglass loose-fill insulation to bring the attic back up to proper code levels. This final step restored the home after the damage caused by the wildlife activity and years of failed repairs.
Full Scope of Work
- 1Full wildlife exclusion seal-up of all entry points
- 2Trapping and monitoring over several weeks
- 3Removal of 6 squirrels from two attic spaces
- 4Removal of 5 rats from basement
- 5Confirmed no fresh activity for two weeks before proceeding
- 6Removed all contaminated insulation
- 7Remediation with disinfectant, antimicrobial, and deodorizer treatments
- 8Negative air machine during remediation process
- 9Air sealed all gaps and penetrations
- 10Installed new batt insulation in walls and vaulted ceiling
- 11Installed new blown-in fiberglass insulation to code
Results
- All wildlife access points permanently sealed with proper materials
- 6 squirrels and 5 rats removed — activity confirmed stopped before remediation
- Complete elimination of contamination, odor, and biological hazards
- All air leak points sealed between attic and living space
- New insulation installed to code throughout — walls, ceiling, and floor
- Home restored to a condition better than before the wildlife damage began
Why This Job Matters
This job is a strong example of what happens when wildlife issues are not handled correctly from the beginning. The prior owner tried DIY methods — likely after getting advice from social media, friends, or people who meant well but did not understand wildlife behavior, exclusion methods, or proper materials. They also hired the cheapest companies available, only to find later that the materials were too thin, the work was incomplete, and the animals were never stopped. Cheap work became very expensive. By the time we arrived, what may have originally been a manageable repair had turned into a project requiring full exclusion, weeks of trapping, complete remediation, and total insulation replacement. Trapping alone does not solve the problem. Foam, caulk, thin metal, and quick patches do not solve the problem long-term. A true solution requires finding the entry points, sealing them correctly with the right materials, removing the animals, confirming the activity has stopped, and then restoring the damaged areas the right way.
Full Lower Attic Remediation
Complete insulation removal, sanitation, air sealing, and reinstallation
This lower attic required a full remediation — not just an insulation swap. The existing loose-fill fiberglass and batted walls and vaulted ceiling insulation needed complete removal due to contamination. After stripping the space down, our crew performed HEPA vacuuming of all remaining feces and debris, applied antimicrobial spray, disinfectant, and deodorizer treatments, then air sealed every accessible penetration before installing new batt insulation in the walls and vaulted ceiling and blowing in new fiberglass on the attic floor. This is the level of work that separates a real remediation from a company that just removes and blows back in.
Full Scope of Work
- 1Removed all loose-fill fiberglass insulation
- 2Removed all batted insulation from walls and vaulted ceiling
- 3HEPA-vacuumed all remaining contamination and debris
- 4Applied antimicrobial spray to all surfaces
- 5Applied disinfectant spray to all surfaces
- 6Applied deodorizer treatment throughout
- 7Air sealed all accessible gaps and penetrations
- 8Installed new fiberglass batt insulation in walls and vaulted ceiling
- 9Blew in new fiberglass insulation on attic floor
Results
- Complete elimination of contamination and odor from the attic space
- All air leak points sealed — no light visible through penetrations, reducing conditioned air loss
- New R-38+ insulation installed throughout — walls, vaulted ceiling, and floor
- Improved HVAC efficiency — system holds conditioned air instead of losing it through unsealed gaps
- Clean, sanitized attic that no longer poses a health risk to the home's occupants
Why This Matters
A lot of companies just remove insulation and blow new material back in — skipping the critical steps that make the difference. They skip the HEPA vacuuming. They skip the disinfectant and antimicrobial sprays. They skip the deodorizer. They skip air sealing entirely. The result looks like new insulation, but the contamination remains, the air leaks persist, and the homeowner is left with the same problems they started with. We do every step because every step matters. Don't let your attic be an overlooked portion of your home just because it's not seen — it is one of the most important areas of the house.
